CALL FOR CHAPTERS

“The Handbook of Urban and Regional Economics”

The editors invite chapter proposals for the Handbook of Urban and Regional Economics, a
comprehensive and analy<cally rigorous volume examining recent advances in spa<al
theory, quan<ta<ve modelling, and empirical research on subna<onal development.

The Handbook aims to synthesise fron<er research in structural spa<al modelling and causal
empirical analysis while integra<ng ins<tu<ons, fiscal architectures, and governance
structures into mainstream regional economic frameworks. Emphasis will be placed on
understanding persistent subna<onal inequality, regional adjustment to global shocks, and
the evolving spa<al consequences of digitaliza<on, climate transi<on and geopoli<cal
restructuring.

We welcome chapter proposals that engage with the following themes:

• Spa<al economic theory
• Structural spa<al equilibrium models and quan<ta<ve urban economics
• Advances in spa<al econometrics and structural es<ma<on
• Agglomera<on economies and produc<vity dynamics
• Regional divergence and structural transforma<on
• Land markets, housing supply, and regulatory constraints
• Commu<ng, residen<al mobility and internal migra<on
• Informality and dual urban systems
• Climate and ci<es
• Migra<on and ci<es
• Infrastructure, accessibility, and regional produc<vity
• Trade shocks, global value chains, and regional specialisa<on
• Fiscal federalism, intergovernmental transfers, and regional inequality
• Metropolitan fragmenta<on and governance efficiency
• State capacity and subna<onal financial performance
• Measurement of regional inequality and well-being
• Climate transition and green regional adjustment
• Regional digital divides
• Rural-urban dynamics in regional development
The editors remain open to proposals addressing addi<onal themes, provided they
demonstrate strong theore<cal founda<ons, methodological rigor and clear relevance to
spa<al economic analysis.

Proposed chapters should demonstrate:

• Strong analy<cal founda<ons in economic theory and/or structural modelling.
• Rigorous empirical iden<fica<on strategies or quan<ta<ve spa<al methods.
• Engagement with recent advances in the field (last 10–15 years).
• Clear subna<onal or regional focus.
• Where possible, integra<on of evidence from both advanced and emerging economies.

The Handbook seeks contribu<ons that advance conceptual clarity, methodological rigor,
and compara<ve empirical insight. Descriptive case studies without analy<cal framing will
not be considered.

Submission process
Interested contributors are invited to submit:

• A 500-word abstract outlining the chapter’s core argument, methodology and
contribu<on.
• A short biographical note (150 words).
• Key recent publica<ons relevant to the proposed topic.
• Abstracts will be received on a rolling basis (deadline May 31st, 2026).
• No<fica<on of abstract acceptance: June 30, 2026.
• Full chapter deadline: January 15, 2027.

NOTE: All submi.ed abstracts will be evaluated by the editors prior to inclusion in the
Handbook proposal. The Handbook proposal will undergo external peer review prior to
approval. All submi.ed full chapters will be subject to a review process before inclusion
in the final volume. The Handbook aims to meet the highest standards of scholarly rigor
and only chapters that saDsfy strong analyDcal and methodological criteria will be
included.
