The government’s commitment to efficiency cuts and reform will impact on the science and technology industry. Plans are to cut funding for new projects by 41%, reducing the existing £872m budget to £517m by 2014/15 in order to contribute to the country’s economic health.

There are, of course, arguments against this approach. Dr Peter Tindemans, convener of the science policy working group at EUROSCIENCE, states: “The European Union must invest in research and development and human capital, while creating the conditions to enable companies and universities to produce new products, processes, services and infrastructure.

"Economic studies show that investing in science and technology will lead to growth and will lead to more jobs. The costs of not innovating are much greater than the costs of innovating."
