Visita del investigador Juan Soto y Seminario REGIOlab
Apreciados compañeros,
Durante toda esta semana estará realizando una breve estancia con nosotros Juan Soto. Juan es Investigador Adjunto del Centro Latinoamericano para el Desarrollo Rural (RIMISP), Santiago, Chile, e Investigador Asociado del Instituto de Economía Aplicada Regional (IDEAR), Antofagasta, Chile. Es Master en Economía Regional y se encuentra actualmente haciendo su doctorado en este campo en la London School of Economics.
El próximo miércoles 7 de septiembre a las 11 horas impartía un seminario en la Sala Klein del Departamento de Economía Aplicada presentando la investigación “Are rural areas taking advantage of proximity to cities?” (abajo se adjunta resumen).
A parte Juan estará en la Sala Lewis trabajando durante esta semana y organizaremos reuniones con él para establecer líneas de colaboración por si deseáis participar.

Título del seminario: Are rural areas taking advantage of proximity to cities?
Resumen: In this paper, we identify the positive and negative effects from proximity to cities on the economic development of rural areas in Chile. Following Partridge and Rickman (2003), and Rappaport (2004), this work characterizes the changes in population and employment in rural areas as the partial adjustments on the location of households and firms due to the spatial variations in agglomeration economies, amenities, and public provision of services of nearby cities. In order to observe how rural areas are influenced by the scope and intensity of the linkages with urban areas, we estimate the effect of travel time to cities and market potential variables, over the change of population and employment for 22,241 rural areas in Chile, using the two last Chilean national censuses of 1992 and 2002, rural travel time estimates, and stable satellite light night.
