As the science and knowledge service of the Commission, the mission of DG Joint Research Centre is to support EU policies with independent evidence throughout the whole policy cycle.

The JRC is located in 5 Member States (Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain). Further information is available at: https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/

The ‘Knowledge for Finance, Innovation and Growth’ Unit is the knowledge management unit of the Directorate for Growth and Innovation.

As part of this Unit, the Regional Economic Modelling team is looking for a researcher to contribute to the European Commission’s impact assessments of different EU policies at the territorial level (NUTS2 regions) by means of the dynamic spatial computable general equilibrium (CGE) model RHOMOLO. More background info are available at https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/rhomolo.

Qualifications and requirements:
At the time of applying, the successful candidate should preferably have a PhD (doctoral diploma) or a minimum of 5 years professional experience after university studies of at least 3 years attested by a diploma.

He/she should have a strong academic background in economics and advanced knowledge and experience in quantitative methods (econometrics and CGE models), and a good command of one or more relevant programming languages (e.g. STATA, GAMS).

The successful candidate will work as an applied economist – in close cooperation with the modellers in the team. In particular, the candidate will work on managing / updating / extending the regional data system currently used in combination with Rhomolo and/or as a stand-alone product. Statistical and econometric techniques will be used for both the purpose of supporting territorial impact assessments of EU policies and reinforcing the empirical validation of the RHOMOLO model. Examples of areas of interest are territorial indicators currently included in ESTAT regional statistics (i.e. R&D, employment, sectoral info), micro-level data (i.e. LFS, SILC, CIS), input-output analysis. Research and analytical work will involve collaboration with other European Commission services (for instance in the context of the European Semester) and other relevant international organisations and research institutions.

A track record of research and publications will be an asset. A very good level of written and spoken English is essential.
