Call for Expressions of Interest from ACEI members

With the main purpose of gaining visibility for ACEI among international cultural institutions, favouring innovation and knowledge transfer from our members’ works and providing a forum for discussion among scholars, experts, managers and policy-makers on the Economics of World Heritage, we are hereby issuing the call for the Granada International Convention on Economics of World Heritage, a meeting to be held in the Alhambra Palace, Granada, Spain, on 20 and 21 March 2025, organised by the Alhambra and Generalife Council together with the ACEI (Association for Cultural Economics International).

The scientific programme will include papers by scholars from the Association, which will be discussed together with contributions from experts and policymakers from international cultural institutions as well as managers of relevant World Heritage case studies. International institutions related to cultural heritage include UNESCO, the World Bank, OECD, the Inter-American Development Bank, and others.

Possible subjects for discussion and submission through papers include (but are not limited to) the following:
Governance of world heritage and institutions; labelling and accreditation; congestion and replicas; economic valuation and impact; social, cultural and economic sustainability; disasters, conflicts and preservation of world heritage; new formulas of international cooperation; communication and interpretation (visitors’ experiences); community engagement and community-oriented services; typology of world heritage; measurement, characterisation and impact of cultural tourism; data and indicators.

With the collaboration of the Alhambra and Generalife Council, seven places are granted to academic members of ACEI, covering accommodation, basic food expenses during the conference and travel expenses (in the form of distance fares). ACEI members who are working or willing to undertake a work on the economic analysis of World Heritage are encouraged to participate in order to provide a diverse, representative and novel pool of contributions to be discussed in an open and useful forum among leading international cultural institutions and managers of World Heritage case studies. The publication of the proceedings (publisher to be determined) is planned.

A management and selection committee has been appointed, composed of Luis César Herrero (University of Valladolid), Ilde Rizzo (University of Catania) and two representatives of the Alhambra and Generalife Council, all of whom will be in charge of the scientific programme. Those interested in attending the Granada Convention under the terms established should fill in the following template (also below) by 12 November 2024, including name of author/s, title of paper and extended abstract (400 words). A decision on applications is expected by 20 November. Papers and presentations must be submitted by 4 March 2025. Papers should be ready to be published after the Convention within a reasonable period of time. If you have any queries, please contact luiscesar.herrero@uva.es, citing Granada Convention in the email subject.
