Portuguese Section

Call for Papers | 33rd APDR Congress, June 30-July 3, 2026, Polytechnic University of Cávado and Ave, Barcelos, Portugal

The APDR invites regional scientists, economists, managers, sociologists, geographers, urban planners, engineers, policy makers, and researchers of related disciplines to participate in the 33rd APDR Congress with the theme «Interregional Governance, Cohesion and Sustainability: Overcoming Territorial Inequalities for a Balanced Future» that will be held from 2 to 3 of July, 2026, at the Polytechnic University of Cávado and Ave, Barcelos, Portugal. On June 30 and July 1, 2026, just before the main conference, a Sustainable Regional Development Academy will be organized for a limited number of participants.

The theme “Interregional Governance, Cohesion and Sustainability: Overcoming Territorial Inequalities for a Balanced Future” underscores the growing importance of collaborative frameworks that promote equitable and sustainable development across regions. In the face of persistent territorial disparities, effective interregional governance emerges as a key mechanism for fostering cohesion, resilience, and shared prosperity. By integrating economic, environmental, social, and cultural dimensions, this approach seeks to ensure that sustainability is achieved not only within individual regions but also across territorial boundaries, paving the way toward a more balanced and inclusive future.

Looking Ahead to a Historic Celebration in Barcelona: The 50th International Conference on Regional Science – RER 2026

After celebrating nearly five decades of regional science dialogue, we are thrilled to announce that the 50th Reunión de Estudios Regionales (RER) will take place in Barcelona, from October 21 to 23, 2026, hosted by the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC).

This will be a very special edition of our annual meeting, not only because we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the AECR congresses, but also due to the relevance and timeliness of the chosen theme: “AI-Driven Territories for a Sustainable Future: 50 Years Building Knowledge for Regional Development.”

This theme seeks to reflect upon two of the most transformative and urgent dimensions of our time:

  • The disruptive opportunities offered by Artificial Intelligence for regional development.
  • The broad and interdisciplinary challenge of Sustainability, encompassing social, environmental, and economic dimensions.

The congress will offer a rich program of plenary sessions, roundtables, and social events in one of the most vibrant and globally connected cities in Europe. We hope to make this anniversary not only a moment to reflect on the legacy of regional science in Spain, but also a space to project it forward.

We warmly invite you to join us in Barcelona to celebrate the past, present, and future of our community.
