Call for participants in the 22nd ERSA / 4th PREPARE Summer School -3-12 July 2009, Volos Greece

MAIN THEME

The summer School will be focused on Regional Growth Models. This topic constitutes one of the core themes in Regional Economics and has attracted the attention of the scientific community for its theoretical foundations, empirical applications and policy implications. In a format of combined lectures and hands-on training the School will provide education by top-level experts in the following areas:

·         A comparative analysis of regional growth models

·         Regional growth models and empirical evidence

·         Advanced methods in regional growth modelling

·         Hands-on experience in constructing a growth model

 

VENUE

The European Regional Science Association is offering the opportunity to participate in the 22nd ERSA / 4th PREPARE Summer School that will be held July 3rd – July 12th 2008 at the Department of Planning and Regional Development, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece. The event is funded by the European Union (Marie Curie Program).

The port city of Volos lies at the foot of Mount Pelion on the eastern coast of mainland Greece between Athens and Thessaliniki (at 315 and 215 from each respectively).  The greater Volos conurbation has a population of 150.000, including four municipalities.

Volos is easily accessible from Athens or Thessaloniki by various means, as it is near the main north-south Greek motorway (connecting Athens with Thessaloniki) while it also has a railway station, a passenger’s port and an airport for charter flights.

The Department of Planning and Regional Development, founded in 1989, was the first department in Greece to offer an undergraduate professional degree in the field. The Department also offers a postgraduate course in Urban and Regional Planning and Development. This Department has successfully organized many international conferences among which the XVI AESOP Congress (2002), the ECPR annual conference (2000) and ERSA Congress (2006).

 

PROGRAM

The program is consisted of an intensive ten-day advanced course in Regional Growth Models which includes lectures, hands-on training, student presentations, discussions, a career advancement session and excursions. It will start on Friday July 3rd and close on Sunday 12th July. Students are expected to arrive at the venue on Thursday 2nd July and depart on Monday 13th July. We will start at 9am and work until 5pm. Evening will be free for swimming or relax in the city of Volos or the mount Pelion.

 

SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS

Participants will be selected by the local organizing committee primarily according to the above mentioned criteria. In addition to these criteria, the organizers will look for an international mix of participants. The number of participants is limited to 30.

 

COSTS

The costs of the programme and of local accommodation of participants will be covered by funding from the European Union (Marie Curie Program). Also, the travel expenses of participants (cheapest opportunity) will be covered up to a limit of €300.
