Latest News from the

NARSC Congress, Washington DC

.

The 61st North American Meetings of the Regional Science Association International were held in Bethesda, Maryland November 12-15, 2014. Located just northwest of Washington, D.C. the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Bethesda provided a wonderful venue for the meetings.

This was the largest gathering of regional scientists ever held in North America with over 800 in attendance. Of course attendees came not only from North America but from countries all over the world. The diversity of nationalities and topics represented at the meetings is perhaps best exemplified by the three plenary presentations that were delivered.
The meetings kicked off with the traditional plenary RSAI Fellows Lecture. This year's presentation titled "The Territorial Dimension of the Knowledge Economy in Europe: Which Innovation Policies in an Era of Austerity?" was scheduled to be delivered by Roberta Cappelo of Politecnico di Milano. Unfortunately Professor Cappelo was unable to attend the conference this year and so her presentation was very ably delivered by her colleague Professor Andrea Caragliu.

On Thursday morning Janice Madden of the University of Pennsylvania presented the NARSC Presidential Lecture. Professor Madden's presentation was titled "The Demography of Commuting: How Population Groups Create and Respond to Cities".
On Friday evening Henry Yeung of the National University of Singapore delivered the Regional Science Policy and Practice Plenary Plenary Presentation titled "Regional Development in the Global Economy: A Dynamic Perspective of Strategic Coupling in Global Production Networks"

In addition to these plenary sessions there were many excellent papers presented as part of breakout sessions. The meetings also provided ample opportunity for networking at both the Wednesday and Thursday evening receptions as well as numerous coffee breaks.

For 2015, the NARSC event will take place in the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon in the Pacific Northwest, so make a note in your calendars for the 11th -14th of November, 2015. Be sure to join us for what promises to be another exciting gathering of regional scientists.

Best regards,
Neil Reid, NARSC Executive Director
