Call for Papers WSDEMOG 2024:

Workshop on depopulation processes and demographic transformations, technological advances, and the path to sustainability in the European regions

September 19-20, 2024, Universitat Jaume I, Castelló de la Plana (Spain)

In an era marked by major demographic changes and rapid technological advances, this call seeks contributions that explore the intersection between population decline, the economics of automation and the quest for sustainability, with a particular focus on Europe. We invite papers that address how demographic changes, especially depopulation in particular regions, impact economic and policy decisions. Issues of special interest (but not restricted) are:

  • Demographic Changes and Economic Impact: Papers should explore how demographic shifts, including depopulation and aging populations, are affecting the economic activities and labor markets across Europe. What strategies can mitigate the negative impacts of these demographic trends on regional development and the widening urban-rural divides?
  • Automation and AI as Economic Drivers: Contributions should examine the role of automation and AI in fostering economic resilience within demographic decline. How can these technologies be employed to support regional growth, and what implications do they have for skill requirements, left-behind regions, and dependency ratios?
  • Policy Adjustments for Sustainability: We encourage papers that propose policy innovations aimed at adapting to demographic changes while promoting sustainable and inclusive growth. How can policy adjustments address the challenges posed by aging populations and technological advancements to maintain social equity and cohesion?

Keynote speaker:  Geoffrey J.D. Hewings, Emeritus Director, Regional Economics Applications Laboratory. Professor Emeritus in Economics, Agricultural & Consumer Economics, Geography & Regional Science, Urban & Regional Planning and in the Institute of Government & Public Affairs. University of Illinois.

A limited number of papers will be selected for presentation during plenary sessions to complement the keynote conference. During the meeting, each presentation will last 20 minutes and will be followed by 10 minutes of general discussion.

The papers should be sent in PDF format through email to catedraavant@uji.es before 30 June 2024. The notification of Acceptance/Rejection will be announced by 10 July 2024. Then, a registration form and payment instructions will be sent to the authors of accepted papers. The Meeting fee is 90 euros and covers the expenses of coffee breaks, lunches, dinners, and hotel room for up to two nights. Attendants should cover their own travel expenses to reach the University.

This meeting is an CATEDRA AVANT supported event, which could lead to possible publications on related special issues in different journals.
