Please remember that it is a one member one vote system. We look forward to receiving your vote. Closing date is 4pm (GMT) Tuesday January 1st. The name of the successful candidate will be announced in the New Year e-mail to membership. The 5 candidates are: John I. Carruthers is an Economist in the Office of Policy Development and Research at the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development; he also holds affiliate faculty appointments in the Department of Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington and the National Centre for Smart Growth Research and Education at the University of Maryland. Prior to joining the Department of Housing and Urban Development, he was the Director of Research at Greenfield Advisors, a Seattle-based real estate consulting practice and, before that, an Assistant Professor in the School of Planning and the Department of Geography and Regional Development at the University of Arizona. Dr. Carruthers has published widely in regional science oriented journals, including Environment and Planning B, Geographical Analysis, Growth and Change, the Journal of Regional Science, Papers in Regional Science, and Urban Studies. In 2007, the editors of Environment and Planning B nominated his paper (co-authored with Gudmundur Ulfarsson) “The Cycle of Fragmentation and Sprawl: A Conceptual Framework and Empirical Model” for the 2007 Association of European Schools of Planning´s Paper Prize, which honours the best paper published in a European planning journal during the preceding year. Dr. Carruthers regularly attends the meetings of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, the European Regional Science Association, the North American Regional Science Council, and the Western Regional Science Association, and has also served as an organizer for many of these meetings. His professional service includes regular referee work for a wide array of leading scholarly journals, numerous book reviews, and membership on the Board of Directors of the Department of Housing and Urban Development´s daycare centre. In addition to his research and other activities, Dr. Carruthers is a committed educator who genuinely values the time he spends teaching and mentoring students though his university affiliations. He lives in the Washington, DC area with his wife, Renee, and two daughters, Lila and Beatrix. Proposer: Brigitte Waldorf Antonio Páez, Ph.D., Associate Professor (Tenured), Centre for Spatial Analysis/School of Geography and Earth Sciences, McMaster University (Canada) Proposer: Pavlos Kanaroglou Daniel Shefer is a Professor of Urban and Regional Economics at the Technion- Israel Institute of Technology. He holds the Kunin-Lunenfeld Chair in Urban and Regional Planning and is the former Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning at the Technion where he has taught since 1970. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley (BLA), Harvard University (MCP), and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (PhD) in Planning and Economics. Professor Shefer has served as Senior Economist in the urban and regional economics Division of the World Bank in Washington DC, and as a visiting Professor at the Tinbergen Institute in Amsterdam. He has also been a Visiting ProfessorScholar at several leading Universities in the US and recently, held an appointment as a Visiting Fellow at the Taubman Centre, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. His areas of expertise are: urban and regional economics, joint transportation and land use modelling, modelling urban and regional economic growth, technology transfer, economic and technological aspects of industrial location, and various aspects of transportation and environmental economics. He has published widely in these fields – several books, and over one hundred articles. Dan has been a loyal member of the RSAI for many years. He is serving as a member of the ERSA Prize Committee, and served as Chairman of that committee for 5 years, from 2000 to 2006. In the past he served for several years as the President of the Israeli Section of the RSA. Proposer: Daniel Felsenstein Terry L. Clower is associate director for the Centre for Economic Development and Research at the University of North Texas (UNT). He is also an associate professor of applied economics at UNT. Dr. Clower´s research focuses on regional economic development, urban issues, trans Proposer: Bud Weinstein Charlie Karlsson is Professor of the Economics of Technological Change at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS), Jönköping University, Jönköping, Sweden and Guest Pro¬fessor of Economics at University West, Uddevalla, Sweden. At JIBS he is director of CISEG (Centre for Innovation Systems, Entrepreneurship and Growth) of INA (The Institute of Industrial Research) and of JIBS/CESIS (Centre of Excellence for Science and Innovation Studies). He is also Associate Professor (“docent”) in Regional Planning at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. He is currently nominated for a Chair in Industrial Economics and Organisation at Blekinge Technical University. Charlie holds a BSc and an MSc in Economics from Gothenburg University and a PhD in Economics from Umeå University. During his career he has been Assistant Professor of Economics at Gothenburg University, Karlstad University College, and Jönköping University College, expert on workers´ co-operatives at the Ministry of Industry in Stockholm, research leader for the Regional Science Research Unit, Karlstad University College, and In his research, he has focused infrastructure economics, urban economics, the economics of technological change, economic growth, international trade, regional economics, spatial industrial dynamics, entrepreneurship and small business economics, and the economics of R&D and higher education. Proposer: Roger Stough 2) CALL FOR NOMINATIONS, 2008 FELLOWS OF RSAI 3) Other RSAI prizes 2008 Nominations please to Graham Clarke by 31st January 2008 b) The Peter Nijkamp RSAI Research Encouragement Award for an Early Career Scholar from a Developing Country The Award recognizes the outstanding potential of an early career researcher from a nation in the developing world and in which there is a formal Section of RSAI, and seeks to encourage the development of the early career scholar as a high quality researcher in the field of Regional Science and as a participant in the international Regional Science community. Eligibility to apply for the Award is restricted to early career researchers, defined as person in full time employment in either a teaching or a research position in a university or research institution in a developing nation in which there is a member section of RSAI, and who has held their doctoral qualification for no mote than seven (7) years as at the 31 December in the year in which they apply for the Award. An applicant for the Award must have been living in that or another developing nation continuously for at least the three year period from the 31 December of the year in which the application for the Award is made. An applicant for the Award must be a member of RSAI. The Award is made for what is judged in part on an evaluation of the quality of a written formal research paper on a topic in Regional Science, formatted in accordance with the requirements for submitting a paper Papers in Regional Science, and in part on an evaluation of the research track record and performance of the applicant as demonstrated in a full Curriculum Vitae. 4) ERSA 2008 Conference ERSA 2008 – CALL FOR PAPERS CULTURE, COHESION AND COMPETITIVENESS: REGIONAL PERSPECTIVES 27-31 August 2008, Liverpool, UK Chosen as European Capital of Culture for 2008, Liverpool has been the focus for numerous regeneration initiatives. The city has changed dramatically in the last decade and is emerging as one of the UK´s leading centres for learning, culture, entertainment, sport and endeavour. The 2008 ERSA Congress, jointly hosted by the Department of Civic Design at the University of Liverpool and the British and Irish Section of the Regional Science Association International, will provide an excellent opportunity to see, and reflect on, the substantial progress that has been made. The overarching theme for the Congress, ´Culture, Cohesion and Competitiveness´ encapsulates a number of different aspects that are topical and relevant, not only for Liverpool but also across the whole of Europe. The programme will be organised around a variety of topics and include plenary sessions with lectures by distinguished keynote speakers, including Professor Ed Glaeser (Harvard).
